Wooooot! So we got to Seattle during the morning of Saturday. I was exhausted. It was about a 21 hour drive up to Seattle, Washington from Los Angeles but it was definitely an awesome drive up here and I got to know some of the people on my team better. So my team consists of 12 people who are all pretty amazing! We stayed at Trevor Smith's house, he is one of the two leaders of the trip the first night, which was also amazing because he has a really neat house and a lot of yardage. haha. I was feeling pretty excited when all 12 of us were together on Saturday as two from the group had flown so we hadn't been all together yet. On Saturday we pretty much just hung out with each other and explored parts of Seattle. We got to go to this neat lake/waterfall place and I got to take some pretty awesome pictures. We then went to this neat place called Triple X where they sell pretty awesome root beer floats.

On Sunday I was definitely encouraged by what God had take place. We started out by going to church at the place we would be staying at the rest of the week. The service was pretty cool as I got to hear a different style of service that I really had never had the chance to experience. They sang gospel music during worship which I thought was pretty awesome and they seemed to be really passionate and loving towards God. Then during the service that gave people the chance to tell every one about what God is doing in their life or in the life of a loved one. I was especially touched by a lady sitting behind me who was happy for her grandchild that she was holding and for her husband who was going to church for the first time and was fighting drug addiction. It's so awesome how God changes the lives of people who have been trying so hard to change their lives with their own strength but have failed. God's love is everlasting and never-ending! Anyway, later in the service the woman and her husband came down and the man accepted Jesus into his life. How exciting to see this within the first couple of hours of me being in Seattle. :) I then went to talk to the lady afterwards and got to hold the baby. It was an awesome baby... I'm pretty sure it looked just like I did when I was 3 months old. Haha.

After church we all went out to an ethiopian restaurant and I got to talk to the guy who would be leading us everywhere, Uncle Tom! He is such an amazing, funny, and Jesus loving guy. He starts a conversation with any person he sees with such ease and it seems that every person he meets enjoys his company so much. He is definitely a big encouragement on this trip for me and I'm guessing for the rest of the team as well. Right after we had eaten lunch we went straight to downtown Seattle and did an underground tour. There's a whole city under Seattle! haha. Well not a whole city but definitely parts where people use to live but had to cover up and build on top because of water floods. This was pretty cool except for the fact that I was getting really tired... haha. But I did get to see different parts of Seattle and take some more pictures.

Ok, so this next part is definitely something I found really encouraging and something I was looking really forward to doing. Well, I didn't know that we were going to be doing this exactly but I had the thought we would be doing this general idea. So we went on a scavenger hunt through downtown Seattle where we had a list of thing that we needed to get done. Well this is the same list that they used during the summer project but during the S.P. they had all day to complete it whereas we only had around 2 hours but I still thought it was a great experience! The stuff on the scavenger hunt list included: 1) Interview a homeless person. 2) Borrow a quarter from someone you do not know. 3) Retrieve a usable item from a dumpster. 4) Collect 10 aluminum cans and find out the current rate of redemption. 5) Record a negative "sense experience" for all 5 senses. 6) Interview an elderly person. 7) Find out the daily earnings of someone who begs for a living and the list goes on but I think you get the general idea. It was pretty awesome and so we all split up into 3 groups of 4. I had James, Pat and Cristen.

My group started off and went off to a park and walked towards two homeless people sitting together on a bench. After talking for a while I find out that one guy had lived in Turlock, my hometown, for about 10 years of his life. This is where he had been arrested for the third time and left for Colorado. He then went on to hitch rides towards California because said he found the homeless people in Colorado boring as all they did was wait for the library to open and then go inside and sit down inside until it closed. They would repeat this process everyday and he said he had met a man who said he had been doing that for 6 years. So he decided that he didn't want to be there anymore and went from Salt Lake City Utah to Reno to Sacramento to being stranded in some place in Oregon and ended up in Seattle Washington about two weeks ago. He had a lot of good stories to tell but I ended up talking to the other guy after a while.

The other guy was from some place in Texas, near the Mexican-American border. He said that he had just spent about over a year in prison in Mexico for a crime that wasn't even his fault. He had been showing a couple around Mexico who no ability whatsoever to speak spanish. Apparently, these two had murdered someone a week prior and while they were at his house the cops busted in and arrested all three of them. The cops took everything he had including his boat, which he seemed to really love. So after getting out of prison he headed up north and ended up in Alaska. He had an english major from some University on the east coast but decided he didn't want to be a teacher so he didn't really know what to do. He did tell us though that he had written sermons for a pastor in his younger years and was familiar with the teachings of the Bible. But he didn't agree with what was taught in the homeless shelters because they usually just stated stuff like "if you weren't such a drug addict you wouldn't be where you were today..." or stuff like that. I'm not really sure if they say stuff like that to some degree or if he just wasn't listening all the way but I definitely felt heart-broken for him. After some talking it was time to head back to the bus. (Oh also, we travel everywhere in a prison bus which is pretty amazing) We then got to share stories with the other teams and it was pretty awesome to see how God was working within our group. Ahhhh! This has definitely been a very exciting few days and I am excited to see where God leads my team and I for the rest of the week.

If you would like, you could pray for my team and I in a couple of ways:

1) That our hearts would be broken for the homeless and for anyone we come across during our big adventure in Seattle (Matthew 25:31-46)

2) That the team would be unified and place unity in Christ. (Ephesians 4)

3) For the people we meet, that God would soften their hearts and be present in that conversation. That the whole conversation would be about him and for his glory. (Philippians 2:1-4)

Thank you and we appreciate the prayers very much.

James 1:2-6

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he ask, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-50132586869926019572010-03-07T00:48:00.001-08:002010-03-07T22:26:49.476-08:00Pre-Seattle (God is SO GOOD!)

So I haven't written on this blog in a while but I decided to write another post becomes of certain events. This spring break (one week from now) I will be going on a mission's trip to Seattle with Campus Crusade for Christ. We will be working with the homeless and the youth of Seattle within a five day period. I'm pretty excited about going to Seattle and getting to share Jesus Christ to people. I wasn't sure how I was going to be with Homeless people because I was beginning very tired of the same homeless people come up to me and say that they have ran out of gas and need to get to Chicago to see their family. One person in particular has been telling me this since the beginning of my freshman year. I lost some of the heart I had for homeless people and had began to ignore them as they asked me for money. I realized this a couple of weeks ago and asked God to give me a heart for the homeless. This reminded me of the same "Give Me Your Eyes" by Brandon Heath. Such a good song! I just hoped that God would give me the same love, grace and mercy that he showed towards me.

God definitely answered this prayer this past friday night. I was walking to my friend's apartment at around 9:00 pm which is about a 10 min walk. During my walk, a homeless lady sitting at a bus stop was calling to me. My first thought was to just continue walking and go on with my life. But I then heard something in my head, pretty sure it was God, telling me to turn back. So I walked back and the lady asked me if I would sit with her. I sat down on the bus stop bench with her and she asked if she could use my phone to make a phone call. I let her use my phone and she made a phone call to somebody. After she was done with the phone call she went on to tell me that her name was Cynthia. She said that her long was hurting her a lot and that she had been waiting for the bus for a while. We went on to talk about Christianity and she stated that she was a believer and asked what I believed. So I told her my beliefs and she seemed to be very encouraged by this and asked if I could pray for her. She said that very someone like her, it is a dream if someone could take her out of this cold. There are so many people out there who are in this cold and would love to be in the warmth. She said to help someone like her one needs to bring her into a place that is filled with warmth... or something like that. I don't remember the conversation 100% so forgive me if it seems slightly vague. But anyway, this was so encouraging for me and I haven't been this excited to pray for someone in a while to be honest. During the prayer I just felt God giving me the words that He wanted me to speak to Cynthia.

She seemed to have much more energy and more life after the prayer and we began to talk so more. I told her that I was going to Seattle in a week to minister to homeless and the youth. She then gave me some advice on speaking to the homeless and repeated the statement about the warmth and coldness. I thought this was really relevant to what I was going to do because those who don't know Jesus are currently in darkness and can be in very cold places within their lives. But once someone excepts Jesus they feel the life and light that comes from Jesus Christ. They are rescued from the darkness, from the cold, and are surround by his light and his warmth!

This is definitely what I needed to have happen to me before I went off to Seattle. God has an amazing way of teaching me something and just enabling me to have a heart for every type of person. So I waited for Cynthia until the bus came and she went on her way. God is so good!!! Right? :)

Matthew 25:40-45

And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. So the day started off with me going with one of my roommates, Jack! I thought this would be a really cool experience, which it was, since I didn't get to go with Jack on Monday and now I have the chance too! We started off by going to the cafeteria to get some food because I was really hungry as I skipped breakfast that morning. Jack went to go get a table since he already knew what he wanted to eat. I, on the otherhand, had no idea what I wanted to get as they had different food then the other two universities I went to. I finally found something to eat and then walked over to Jack and sat with him. There wasn't any other table that had room for us so we began eating just the two of us. But I then realized that the people at the table next to us left and then a male student came and sat at the table. I then decided to go ask him if he would like to join our table which he agreed to.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-36702174532805963522009-07-11T23:57:00.000-07:002009-07-12T00:17:03.861-07:0017th Day on CampusSo on Wednesday, Jess left from our team and Tim, Sammy and Emily came over to our team. The day started out with our usual team prayer in before heading off to campus which I found to be very helpful as I was beginning to feel really tired. Wednesday was our usual English lunch so we went straight there. Ryosuke and Mizuho, who both came to the Discover Friends Party that friday, said they were coming so I was just going to meet them there. They came and we began to talk for I think was an hour. I really do enjoy talking to these too and I got to ask them about the game we played on Friday. They really seemed to enjoy it and felt that it was great that we got to talk so deeply about our lives. They were really glad to get a chance to get a Bible and were really looking forward to reading it, I think.
Next we went off to Gakugei to have Men's sports time. Two weeks ago we had it at Hitotsubashi so now we are having it at Gakugei. We got there and started to look for some people to come play with us. We didn't have much luck but I did see Akihiro, who had come to the joyful cafe 3 times. But he said that he was going to play soccer with his friends and he was sorry he couldn't join us. Though when we got to the place we were going to play Ultimate Frisbee and Soccer we found them and decided to have a soccer game with them. It was pretty awesome and they seemed to have a good time. I think they might be coming to that again and also maybe to the joyful cafe. God has been so good on this trip and has done some amazing things!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-45025089375146794172009-07-11T23:53:00.000-07:002009-07-11T23:57:30.430-07:0016th Day on CampusAlright so on Tuesday I went to Hitotsubashi University with my regular team.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-69819504783152458732009-06-24T11:28:00.000-07:002009-06-24T11:40:18.073-07:0015th Day on CampusSo this week would be a little different in a way where we would be switching over to the other team for a day to be with people we haven't worked with. I was switching on Thursday but on Monday Jack and Kyle switched over to our team while Kylan and Jeremy went over to the other team. The day started out with an English lunch where I got to see Maki, Shuhei, and others but Koji wasn't able to make it. But it was still a lot of fun and I am really grateful for God putting them all into my life at Gakugei University! Jack seemed to have such a good time at lunch as well and he was even told that he has a "great" name! Haha! Hope I get to see all of these fun people again in my lifetime! Hopefully sooner rather than later!I then went over with Kyle and Jack to find some students to talk with but during this time I ran into Santa where I chose to talk to him by myself. We were talking for over an hour and was just a really good encouraging conversation though I wasn't able to talk a whole lot about God and the bible but I was able to have a deeper conversation then the week before! Santa is a really great guy to talk to and I was really glad that I ran into him last week!He then went off to class and then I just went the rest of the day with Gen. It was a really encouraging conversation because I was a bit discouraged because I had not gotten into a really deep conversation that day but it was alright and I was glad to have the chance to talk to Gen. 2.5 days left at Gakugei! :(Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-1657750305438769962009-06-15T07:30:00.000-07:002009-06-15T07:59:23.444-07:0014th Day on CampusSo Friday was a really long day! But that only made it even more amazing! :) So it started out with the 25 min train ride to Kokubunji and then the 20 min walk to campus! The day started off with an hour before English lunch would begin. Andrew and I, we were both really tired at the time, went off to search for some people to come to the English lunch. To our surprise we found Jason, a southern baptist who was doing missionary work in Japan as an intern. He told us that his team had already been kicked out of three universities in Tokyo and we then told him about how our other campus team had been told not to come back to one of the universities they were going to. He then came to our English lunch and was able to tell one of the students about God and part of the Gospel which I thought was amazing because it was the same student had shared part of the Gospel with a week ago. I also got to meet a new student from Gakugei which was pretty sweet. He was nervous about not being able to communicate with us at first but he then began to open up and feel really comfortable. He then had to go to class so I decided to go off with Jeremy and we ended up just prayer walking a little bit and then met up with Yusuke and Kylan for more extended prayer before we had to leave. This friday was shorter than most as we only had three hours on campus.

So then there was the Discover Friends Party. This was an outreach event where we could invite some of the Japanese students who we had met in the past three weeks. Though most of the people I had met had sports practice, a part time job or a seminar... Ryosuke, Azuma and his friend. They were really excited to come and had a great time. I was also able to meet some of the other japanese students from the other campuses and they seemed to have had a great time also! Ryosuke seemed to have an a great time playing Soularium, which is a game where there are about 30-40 pictures and we ask a series of questions relating to life and God. It was an awesome game and I had a great time leading my group of seven. Azuma is already a christian at Hitotsubashi but the other two weren't but they ended up taking a Bible and said they wanted to meet with me next Wednesday! I'm definitely really excited about that and I can't wait to see them again! What a great ending to the week!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-36465703376270803592009-06-15T06:52:00.000-07:002009-06-15T07:27:52.287-07:0013th Day on CampusSo this day began with another wonderful 30 min train ride to Hitotsubashi University with my campus team pictured above! When we arrived we split up into pairs of two again and I was with Joe for the second day in a row! I wasn't really with Joe the past two weeks so this was great to have someone new to go out and talk to students with. So we went out to the cafeteria on the small side of campus and met up with a graduate student who was studying law. Joe and him were talking about law movies in America and about other stuff but I can't really remember. We were talking for about 20 min when he told us he had to get to class. So we then went to go get food and then find some new students to sit with. Well, we got food but after that we found that there wasn't any space available for us to sit except for these two seats where we wouldn't be sitting next to anybody.

I then went off to talk with the Project Director, Gen, and that was a really great experience. I just got to see how much I have changed since I had entered the summer project and reflect on some things. Overall, a really great talk and definitely thankful for Gen for talking the time to meet with me. I then went off with Joe again and we went in the other cafeteria and met with a freshman. I don't really remember what we were talking about because I was really tired by the end of the day but Joe was talking for quite a while with him and they seemed to have a really good conversation. Overall, this was a pretty good day and I'm looking forward to the Discover Friend's Party on Friday!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-40070719531792328322009-06-14T07:26:00.000-07:002009-06-15T07:26:01.585-07:0012th Day on Campus So on Wednesday we got to Hitotsubashi campus around 11am and I was going to meet with someone at 11am so we thought it best that I would go by myself since there was also an English lunch that day. So we spent the first hour to look for some people who would be interested in going to the english lunch and I believe we found two people who were interested. I then went off to the other side of the campus to go meet with Yuta but when I got there I realized that there were about eight other people at the table from his sport team and they didn't really seem interested in talking to me. So the whole hour most of the eight people were trying to ignore me while I spent the whole hour trying to start a conversation but only about two people began to talk to me and they didn't have much feedback. But I was glad I got to see Yuta again and that I got to see some other freshmen from the university that day.

I then went off to go head off to the english lunch. Everyone seemed to be in a good conversation. I joined one and the student was really funny though I was told that he had been told the Gospel the day before so that was cool. We were all talking until about two o'clock. Then we split into groups where I would then find my self being paired up with Joe. We decided to talk to someone outside of the cafeteria. We started talking about spiritual ideas and the guy was really interested in speaking about religions and stuff. He said that he had studied other religions and was interested in hearing other points of views... i think. We ended up getting his contact information and telling him about the discover friends party the upcoming friday. I really hope God will begin to work in his life.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-56850593651842486242009-06-11T05:10:00.000-07:002009-06-13T11:25:51.067-07:0011th Day on CampusSo Tuesday was a really exhausting day for me... The day started off with some quiet time which was really nice and I thought I definitely needed it. I then went off with Kylan to the East Side dining hall where we sat with two freshmen. One of them didn't speak english very well while the other did and was even living in the YMCA where students are required to attend a weekly bible study. Kylan was able to share the gospel with him in Japanese since he had told Kylan that he was interested in the Gospel but didn't really understand. It was really neat just getting to see Kylan tell the Gospel in Japanese and get to see how interested this Japanese student was towards it.

We then went over to talk to a student who was sitting on a picnic bench. This guy didn't really seem to happy so I made it my job to try and make him smile. He wasn't really interested in talking about anything, I think, but I did get him to smile once but I forgot what made him do it. He flatly sad he wasn't really interested. The conversation was alright and I guess it was an experience that I needed, if you can understand.

I think we ended up talking to two more people but I'm not totally sure how those conversations went or anything. But I remember the last conversation we had which was probably the most encouraging one of the day! We went over to this guy who had been told about the gospel in some way a few days before that day. So we were all talking for a while and Kylan had known him from when he went to school at the University. We asked him if he wanted to learn more about who Jesus is and why he his so important to us. So right when I began to tell him about Jesus, Kylan's old friend from college comes up and says hi so they both go off to the side while I got to share the Gospel to someone on my own. Which was incidently my personal goal of the week! That was an awesome experience! So he ended up taking a bible and was going to go over it with his christian friend. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-28048207827661847472009-06-08T07:13:00.000-07:002009-06-08T07:58:29.078-07:0010th Day on Campus So today I went back to Gakugei University an hour earlier than we usually did. We left at 10am instead of 11am and arrived around 11am instead of around noon. We started off the day with about an hour team devotional which I found to be really helpful! We then had our joyful cafe where there were three students who came to I believe. I was able to get into a discussion with one of the guys who I had met two times prior to this meeting. I was able to tell him about what I believe and how I got to believe what I believe. He seemed somewhat interested and then changed the subject about Whale hunting for some reason. But I was able to change the subject back to God because he asked me what I thought of whale hunting. So I just told him what the Bible said about animals with the help of Andrew. He then said he had to go to a meeting but would be back on Friday!

I then decided to go for a walk for some reason... I can't remember why exactly. But I was glad I did because I then ran into my friend Yousoke and his friend Santa. They were really excited to see me and we were chatting for about an hour and they bought me pudding! Haha! I didn't get the opportunity to share the gospel but they were really excited to see me again and that we should all get together, we including Koji and Maki, next Monday! They also wanted me to go to their basketball class (they are Physical Education Majors) but I didn't think that would be alright since there were only 20 students in the class and I didn't have any athletic clothing. So we said our goodbyes and I will be seeing them next Monday!

I then went with Yuki, a Christian student at the University, to go share the gospel with some students. During this I managed to see Maki and Shuhei. They were busy so I didn't get to talk to them much but I believe I will be seeing them next Monday! Yuki and I then sat down with a guy who was sitting by himself. He said that he had graduated from the University a few years ago and was currently teaching Junior High. He also stated that his belief was following the Buddhist way and he was Buddhist because of tradition as his parents were Buddhist therefore he had felt the obligation to follow in their footsteps. I then went on to discribe the main points of the Gospel to him with the help of Yuki. Towards the end Yuki asked if he could just finish off describing the Gospel since it would be easier so he told him all about his beliefs and what the Gospel ment to him. After Yuki finished presenting the Gospel, he said that he was very thankful for having us share what our beliefs were and was glad to have met us. But he also said that he didn't want to switch religions because he felt that would be a bit complicated. Yuki and I then realized it was time for us to leave so we said our goodbyes. I just hope that he would be able to remember what Yuki and I told him about God and he would try to pursue more information about what we told him. This was a very encouraging day for me! Can't wait for tomorrow!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-46786304996968770462009-06-07T08:16:00.000-07:002009-06-07T09:09:32.143-07:009th Day on Campus So on Friday, we went back to Gakugei University! I was really looking forward to coming back here though I knew it wouldn't be as long as last time as we had to back an hour earlier. So we had the joyful lunch cafe that day so we were all trying to gather more people to join our lunch. I went to go get food when all of the sudden this guy, who looks really familiar, comes up to me and says "Hello!" We were talking for a while and then I realized that he was one of the students that was helping me with my lunch last friday. I asked if he wanted to come to the joyful lunch and he said yes and with him came about 12 other friends of his who came over to the cafe. This encouraged me greatly because I wasn't sure if we were going to have anyone come to the cafe. This was a great time just to meet other students on Campus besides those I had already met. It was also somebodies 19th Birthday so that was really cool I thought!
Later on, after lunch, I went over to the cafeteria with Scott. We decided to go talk to three guys eating lunch at one table. They asked two other people to come over because I think they thought they would have trouble speaking English. Here Scott was able to present the Gospel in a really neat way that I've never seen before. I found this really encouraging and was really thankful for being able to be with Scott and just being able to see how he was able to converse with the Japanese students even though he was almost ten years older than most of them. He was able to present the main four points of the gospel to them but he was a little rushed so I don't think it went as well as he wanted but I'm sure God is proud! :)

After this conversation I realized we had 20 minutes so I decided to go to the other dining hall and try to find Koji since I hadn't seen him since Monday and he couldn't come to lunch because he had class. Lucky enough, I found him sitting by himself and sat down with him. I hadn't been able to share the Gospel with him before and didn't see enough time to do so then as I only had a couple of minutes left so I decided to just talk to him about life and such. I hope that I get the chance in the near future to share the most important part of my life with him! I know I only have 5 days left at the University so I really am praying to be able to have this chance! He has soccer practice 6 days a week so he doesn't have much free time. But I enjoy talking to Koji because he's really funny! Haha!

I was also encouraged a lot by Toshi, who is pictured below. I saw him at church and he gave me great encouragement on how to ask Japanese students to get to show a person around Tokyo. Haha. I was feeling a bit discouraged before church but Toshi definitely lifted up my spirits! He's also going to Los Angeles on Tuesday so I told him to say Hi to L.A. for me. Haha!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-72029653881776065792009-06-06T06:10:00.000-07:002009-06-06T08:23:49.693-07:008th Day on CampusSo on Thursday, I went to Hitotsubashi again. I went with Kimi to the east side dining hall and then we split up because she was meeting with someone. So I was trying to find Yuuta or Soshi but I couldn't find them in the dining hall. So I decided to sit with someone who was sitting by themselves so I got some food, really good food by the way, and sat next to this guy. I found out that he was a junior and was in a hip-hop dance club. We had a really neat conversation and I was really glad I decided to sit with someone instead of sitting by myself. He told me that he had been in the dance group for three years and that is when he began dancing. He also said that I should come to the dance group next week so I'm excited about that. I invited him to our English lunch next wednesday too but he said that he couldn't because he was going to take his girlfriend out on their first date. But he said that I definitely should come to the dance group next week. The rest of the day was fun and exciting but I didn't really get the chance to meet anyone else but I'm really thankful for who I got to meet.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-73085245177506633862009-06-06T05:47:00.000-07:002009-06-06T08:20:59.136-07:007th Day on Campus
Hey Everybody! So on Wednesday I went to Hitotsubashi again. I go to this university every tuesday, wednesday and thursday while I go to Gakugei University on Monday and Friday. These Universities are all in Tokyo! So on Wednesday, my campus team had an English lunch with some of the Christians on campus as well as about three non-christians. That was a great time just to converse though I didn't really get to talk to the non-christians but it was great getting into a conversation with someone who was a Christian from Japan. He also liked to listen to the pastor that is the pastor of the church I got to in Los Angeles. Then I went on to go talk to a some students with Yusuke, who is pictured below. We then sat down with Ryosuke, I forgot that I had met him the day before for a minute. But then I remembered everything and was able to get into a better conversation than I had with him before and he even played frisbee for a few minutes. Then I met with Tomita later that day with Takito, he is on staff with CCC I think, and we all went running for about three miles. Takito and I were able to tell Tomita about Student Impact here and we are planning on running next week! So that is really exciting and I can't wait to meet up with Tomita again.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-24087085264027859762009-06-03T08:20:00.000-07:002009-06-03T08:45:21.750-07:006th day on CampusKonnichiwa! So today was a really great day for me! It started out at Hitotsubashi and I was going to be with Jeremy today. Jeremy just received his degree in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University. So the day started out with Jeremy and I going to go eat as we were both pretty hungry. We decided to sit with this guy who was sitting all by himself. He said that he had a friend that we be sitting at this table as well. He couldn’t understand English very well but we could keep a decent conversation. His friend soon came over and we found that he spoke English very well. He had studied abroad in Canada about a year ago. So we had been talking for a while and Jeremy found out that both of them played a musical instrument. One of them, Ryosuke, played the Trombone while the other, who went to Canada, use to play the trumpet but switched to the bassoon. Since I used to play the trumpet in high school I was able to talk about music. We were able to talk for about 40 min and then they had to class. We were able to discuss a little bit about Christianity but not as much as I had wished. But the Ryosuke asked if we had facebook, which we did. So we were able to exchange facebook names. haha. So hopefully next time we can elaborate more.
The rest of my time at the University was spent talking with Jeremy about a lot of things. It was a really great conversation and I was really thankful for the talk. Thanks for the encouragement Jeremy! haha. Chem-E Buddies for life! Though, I'm still not sure if I'm going to be a Chemical Engineer. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-35874719626926726562009-06-01T02:43:00.001-07:002009-06-01T08:48:48.529-07:005th Day on CampusSo Today we went back to Gakugei University. These Universities are all in Tokyo by the way. Today my team consisting of Kylan, Jess, Kimi, Andrew, Jeremy, Joe and I, along with Heather, went and had lunch with Koji, Maki and everyone I met on Friday plus some others. The weather was also great too during lunch and it started raining right when lunch was over so we didn't have to stop talking!

Oh and here is a picture of our photographer Andrew, who took the picture above, who is also from USC!
This was a really cool lunch because we just had this big social lunch of Americans and Japanese students. Everyone got to stir up a conversation with a student from Japan and it was a great feeling just getting to see everyone get a long. I got to meet some new Japanese students as well as some new ones. This was a lot of fun and I got to know Koji and them a lot more and hopefully we will be meeting more often though he does have soccer practice six times a week (not Monday). This is a picture of Koji and I. It seemed as though everyone had a good time and everyone was laughing a lot. I just hope we can continue to meet with all of these great Japanese students. This has been a really great time in Japan and I know that God will/is doing amazing things here. Can't wait to go to Hitotsubashi for the next three days! And I'll probably get to see all of these people in the picture on Friday! I haven't really had the chance to fully tell them about Christianity and Jesus Christ so I hope that God will give me this wonderful opportunity to share this with them!

After this I did some quiet time with God since I was feeling God leading me towards spending time with him instead of students. I think I need to set more time for God and just say that I've decided to set a time that I will spend just with God. I had a really great time with God and He has taught me so many things today. I'm looking really forward to this week and just becoming really close to God over the next four weeks. Thank you for all of your prayers! :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-81364154735506361832009-05-30T06:48:00.000-07:002009-06-13T11:29:28.455-07:004th Day on Campus Hello Everybody! Alright so I'm about to tell you the best day I have had on campus so far I believe. This time I wasn't at Hitotsubishi but I was at Gakugei. This campus is a bit smaller so I found it easier to talk to people. I don't know... maybe that was just me. Anyway, I get to the campus and the first thing I do is get food! :) So I got a lunch box and 2 sandwitches because I didn't know which one to get so I got both! haha! Meanwhile, I was wondering whether I was suppose to cook my box or not so I decided to ask some people. I thought that would be a good conversation starter. So I asked this one guy who was in line for the microwave and he didn't really understand me so he got three other guys to come over so they could understand me. They helped me with the microwave and getting chopsticks and we were talking for a bit. I then asked if they wanted to have lunch with me but they didn't really understand and said they had to go somewhere so we said our goodbyes. Though when I told one of them I was from California they all got excited and said, "Schwarzenegger, Arnold Schwarzenegger!" and he did I really good "I'll be back!" impression of him.

Next we went to the Joyful lunch period at the University. It is a time where we got to share fellowship with fellow Christians on the campus by having lunch with them. This was really cool because I got to talk with other Christians from Japan which I haven't been able to do.
After this I went over with Nosuke to go to the cafeteria to find some people to talk with. I saw there were two people sitting by themselves on two different tables. One was asian and the other was a white guy. So Nosuke went over to the asian and said something and I asked him if I could sit with him. He said yes and then I asked him something else but he couldn't understand me so he asked four of his friends to come over from another table to help him understand. So I got to meet all five of the soccer players and one of them, Koji, was really funny. He starts off by saying, "My name is Koji, Passion Koji. I have Passion." He does this while beating his chest. Then two of his friends, who were female come over, and start talking with us as well. He tells me that they have a game tomorrow and say that they wish I could come but they aren't sure where it is. I then go on to repeat his name for some reason and he thinks my name is also Koji. I tell them my name and then they ask, "Passion Josh?" I then go on to say "Passion Josh" and pound my chest. This was a really fun time and we were being pretty loud too but they didn't seem to care. haha. When I tell them that I am from California, they get really excited and Koji does the same impression of Arnold S. as above. I then go on to tell them that Arnold is my uncle and they all get surprised but then I go on to say that I'm kidding. They think that's really funny. We then go on to talk for about 40 min more with a couple American and Japanese jokes. There were also some times when we were all just beating our chests saying that we have passion. I then tell them that I am here with other Americans and ask if they wanna have lunch with us. They all say yes and we establish that we are all going to have lunch on Monday at noon. So they get all excited and say our "See you next time" to eachother. This is a picture of the team.
So I later found out that day that Kylan had met three other people that day who were also from the soccer team. He was thinking about going to their last soccer game of the semester the next day, Saturday, and I thought I would go to. So we both ended up going along with our fellow roommate Jack from Arizona. It took us about an hour to get to the city by train and then an hour to get their by walking. We later decided to take the bus back to the train station since it took us such a long time to walk there... haha. So when we arrive at the soccer game there is about 25 min left in the game. We are walking to find a place to sit when I see Maki and Sachie, the two girls I met on Friday. They get really excited to see me and say that Koji is out on the field and this is actually his first game playing. (There are about 100 soccer players on the team and most of the people who play are seniors.) So I thought it was really cool how I got to see Koji's first soccer game while this would be the only soccer game of his that would occur while I was in Japan. So they decide to yell at Koji, they called him Passion Koji, and tell him that Passion Josh is here. I try to tell them to not do that because he was currently in the middle of the game which had a score of 0-0. When the game ends they begin yelling at Koji that Josh is here and the whole team turns and looks at me. Haha... I didn't really know what to do but wave so that's what I did. Koji then comes to the gate and tells me thanks for coming to the game. Not what I expected but this was overall a good day and I couldn't wait for lunch on Monday! Also, sorry if I'm not good at explaining things very well. I've never really been good at that.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-56607904455119195692009-05-29T06:48:00.000-07:002009-05-29T07:06:21.630-07:003rd Day on CampusSo on Thursday I went to Hitotsubashi again and had a really good time. I ended up eating lunch with Yuuta, who I had met the day previous. I was with Gen and Yuuta seemed to be having a good time. He was teaching me how to use chop sticks and even gave me a piece of his tofu. Later on Soshi ended up joining us so I thought that was really cool because I had been praying earlier that I would meet them again so that I would be able to get their contact information. So this time I was able to talk to them more and was even ble to get their emails this time. Soshi even wanted to hang out later so I thought this could be a really great opportunity to share the Gospel with him.

Later on I went with Kylan again. He wanted to talk to this guy who was smoking but I didn't really want to talk to him because he was smoking and I don't really like talking to people while they are smoking. But we ended up going anyway and found out that this fourth year was a Christian. Saying that less than 1% of Japanese people claim that they are Christain I found this really encouraging. We told him about Student Impact, the Christian Ministry here in Japan, and prayed for him. I felt like he was really encouraged by how we prayed for him and that really changed the whole feeling of the conversation. He seemed to be much more interested in meeting another day and we were able to get his email. I was really encouraged this day and was really thankful for how God can provide. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-16394525407879640002009-05-29T06:08:00.000-07:002009-05-29T06:47:15.585-07:002nd Day on CampusAlright so this was my second day on campus and I went to the same university I went to the day before. Hitotsubashi or something like that... haha. Anyway, wednesday I ended up starting up in the cafeteria. I saw someone who was sitting by themselves who looked my age. I was looking for another 18 year old because the day previous to that I met only fourth years and I wanted to talk to someone my age since I thought we would have more to talk about. So when I went up to the guy and asked if I could sit with him I found out that he was indeed 18 years old. haha. So me and Andrew, who also goes to USC were talking to this guy and he seemed to be really interested in talking to us. We were talking for about 40 min and then he had to leave because he had a meeting to attend. He couldn't understand us totally but we were able to keep a decent conversation. When I asked if he wanted to give us an email so we could meet again he said he didn't have an email so I ended up giving him mine. Hopefully he will end up emailing me back and he's interested in talking with Andrew and I.

So later Andrew and I met up with Jeremy who ate lunch with the whole Lacrosse Team and was going to practice with them around 2pm. So Andrew and I decided to tag along. At 2pm all three of us met up with about 5 lacrosse players and we walked to an area off of campus. On the way there I was talking to two freshmen who were named Soshi and Yuuta. They were pretty fun to talk to and Soshi was able to speak English pretty well. When we arrived we saw that there were about 20 other lacrosse players on the field and they were really impressed that Jeremy had played Lacrosse, the goalie position, for 12 years I think. So he ended up playing the goalie while all of the other 20 lacrosse players were trying to make a goal. Andrew and I ended up talking to the 4 people who were on the female lacrosse team and found someone who spoke really good English. She had studied in America for three years so that was really fun talking. I met some of the other guys too but I don't remember the conversations... So I thought this was a really great day because I wanted to meet people my age and ended up meeting one guy at lunch and a whole lacrosse team that was my age.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-44439771727666932512009-05-28T07:59:00.000-07:002009-05-28T08:35:11.392-07:001st Day on Campus

So Tuesday was our first day going to our designated campuses. My team of 7 went to Hitotsubashi and the other team of 8 went to International Christian University (Just because they go to this school does not make them christian.) So it took about 40 min to arrive their by train I think. Everybody in Tokyo uses the train to go from one place to another in Tokyo. Tokyo is really big and I haven't even left Tokyo since I've arrived in Tokyo 5 days ago. Anyway, I went out with my friend Kylan as we split up into groups of about two. Kylan had actually gone to this school a year ago when he did study abroad for UC Berkeley. We started out at the dining hall where Kylan saw someone that he had met before. The two were talking for about 30-45 min. This was a really cool experience as this was my first real interaction with a Japanese college student.

After this conversation we went back inside the dining hall because I was still hungry and wanted to eat more chicken. So we both went inside and I got more chicken but instead of rice I got french fries! :) I went up the cash register and put down my notebook to get out all of my japanese coins. When I finally found enough yen (Japanese money), I went over to get some water. It was at this point that a Japanese student came up to me and handed me my notebook as a I had left it at the cash register. I then responded with the correct response, Arigato Gozimasu. (That means "thank you" in Japanese... haha) So Kylan said that we should go sit with him so that's exactly what we did. At first, talking to Tomita Kouhei wasn't going so well because he couldn't understand everything I was saying but then Kylan ended up translating which was really cool. (Kylan studied Japanese at UC Berkeley). Kylan was able to tell him about the Christian Ministry that we are working with in Tokyo and why we pray before our meal. He said that he gives thanks for his food before he eats because the food, such as chicken, use to be an animal. This was a really cool opportunity to tell him why we pray and who we pray to. Also, while talking to him I realized I had many similarities with Tomita Kouhei. We were both from small towns of about the same population, we both travel about 6 hours to go to our University, we both use the train to get back home, we both like to run, we both like to run around the track, and we have both wanted to run in a marathon in the city we attend college but never got the chance. So I thought this was really cool so I asked if he would ever like to go running with me around the track. He said yes and gave me his email. I'm really excited to meet him again next week if it's possible!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203357779983504919.post-2979656067571207442009-05-26T05:58:00.000-07:002009-06-01T08:50:50.268-07:00In Tokyo

Hey Everybody,

So I arrived in Tokyo about three days ago and it's just been an amazing experience. This is my first time overseas and it was a really cool experience just going on a plane ride for about eleven hours I think. I was able to watch two Japanese movies with English Subtitles so I would able to learn about the Japanese culture. After we arrived in Japan it was pretty hot. Well I guess it wasn't that hot but it just felt hot because it was humid. Yeah so I slept pretty early that day as I was up for practically twenty-four hours. Yeah I know, that's really unlike me. And the next day I spent most of my time exploring and getting to know the three people I will be living with for the next five weeks. That was a really great day just to see the area I'm living around and just explore the Japanese culture.

The next day, Monday, my team and I got to meet up with the ministry in Japan called Student Impact. It was great meeting them and just being able to see how excited they were that all seventeen of us were here. I also got to meet some people that are in ministry here that are originally from Taiwan. So I got to speak some Chinese with them which was a really cool experience as I know about fifteen phrases! Ni Hao! (that's how you say Hello) I also got to do a scavenger hunt yesturday. The scavenger hunt took place in Shibuya, which is basically the New York of Tokyo in my opinion. That was really fun and I even got to eat some octopus. So that was really cool because I was chewing for it for about 45 minutes. That was really chewy! And Today was great but I'm going to write about it later because I'm really tired! haha! See ya! Kinda... haha. I will also add pictures soon. Maybe tomorrow. haha!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
